India thrash Malaysia 5-1 to retain Asian Games hockey gold

Harmanpreet Singh’s India beat Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final to retain their Asian Games gold medal.

The final was played in Kakamigahara on the closing day of the Games. India’s dominant win means the men’s team have successfully defended their continental title.

The gold also secured India direct qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Asian Games champion earns an automatic berth, removing the need to go through a separate qualification tournament.

The men’s triumph followed the women’s team’s historic 1-0 win over China a day earlier, which ended a 44-year wait for women’s hockey gold. Both hockey golds contributed to India’s late surge in Nagoya.

India finished fourth on the overall medal table with 85 medals, including 21 gold. The hockey double was one of the defining stories of the final weekend, alongside the men’s cricket team’s 19-run win over Pakistan in the final.
