India end Asian Games 2026 fourth with 85 medals

India finished fourth at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.

The Games ran from September 19 to October 4. India sent 495 athletes competing in 36 sports. Flag-bearers at the opening ceremony were shooter Manu Bhaker and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat.

The 85-medal haul is India’s second-best at the Asian Games. The record remains 106 medals at Hangzhou 2023, with 28 gold. The fourth-place finish matches 2023 and is India’s joint-best position since 1962.

Eleven of India’s 21 gold medals came in the final two days. The late surge included men’s cricket, men’s and women’s hockey, wrestling gold for Aman Sehrawat, and historic firsts for archer Kumkum Mohod and golfer Pranavi Urs.

Athletics was India’s biggest contributor with 24 medals. Shooting added 15 medals including three gold. Archery led all disciplines with five gold medals, while boxing claimed three.

China topped the table with 169 gold medals, followed by Japan with 83 and South Korea with 39. Uzbekistan finished fifth with 21 gold, 25 silver and 24 bronze.
