Himachal Pradesh has announced cash rewards of about Rs 5.33 crore for its Asian Games medallists. The state cabinet cleared the awards to honour the athletes’ performances in Aichi-Nagoya.

Four members of the women’s kabaddi team will get Rs 33.33 lakh each. The women’s kabaddi squad won gold, and the state wants to reward each player from Himachal.

Distance runner Sawan Barwal will receive Rs 2.5 crore, the largest individual award. Seema Kumari will get Rs 1.5 crore for her medal-winning show.

State officials said the rewards reflect the government’s sports policy, which links cash awards to podium finishes at major events. The policy aims to encourage young athletes in the hill state.

The announcements come as India’s medal tally at the Games keeps growing. Himachal has produced a steady stream of athletes in athletics, kabaddi and boxing in recent years. The state sports department will soon issue the formal orders for the disbursal of the awards.
