Chahal retires from first-class cricket, eyes white-ball return

Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has announced his retirement from first-class cricket after 17 years.
Chahal, 35, made the announcement on Instagram on Friday. He admitted his long-cherished dream of earning a Test cap was no longer within reach.
The leg-spinner made his first-class debut for Haryana in 2009 and finished with 148 wickets in 49 matches at an average of 32.27. His last red-ball match was for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Lord’s, which ended on September 26.
Chahal never played Test cricket for India but represented the country in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is. His last international appearance was a T20I against the West Indies in August 2023. He was part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
The hunger to play for my country is still very much alive, Chahal wrote. But I AM NOT DONE YET.
He said he would give everything to earn another chance in the one-day and T20 formats.
Why it matters: Chahal’s decision closes the book on a fine red-ball career while keeping the door open for a white-ball comeback.
