Celta Vigo is honoring Iago Aspas in a big way. The club will name a stand after him and build him a statue.

The Tribuna stand at Balaidos will become the Iago Aspas Tribuna with immediate effect. Vigo mayor Abel Caballero said it was chosen because it is already open and will be the largest stand in the rebuilt stadium.

Vigo City Council has also approved a statue of Aspas at the stadium entrance. The project will cost around 200,000 euros. The sculpture will stand right in front of the renamed Tribuna.

The proposal came from Luisa Sanchez, vice president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council. She said: “Iago Aspas is the goal, the goal is Iago Aspas.”

Aspas, 39, is Celta’s all-time leader in appearances, goals and assists. He has played 578 games for his boyhood club, scoring 223 goals with 90 assists. He is still captaining the side in LaLiga.

The striker had a short spell at Liverpool from 2013 to 2015. He made 15 appearances before returning to Celta, where he became a club legend.
