Bhuvneshwar Kumar earns India recall after four-year wait

Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in India’s T20I squad after nearly four years. The BCCI named the 36-year-old in the 16-member squad for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand starting October 22.
His last India appearance also came against New Zealand in November 2022. The recall rewards two strong IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In 2026 he took 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95 and helped RCB win the title.
Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy also returns after a side strain ruled him out of recent series. He replaces Ravi Bishnoi. Hardik Pandya was not considered as he recovers from a shin injury. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for workload management.
Shreyas Iyer will captain the side. The squad also includes Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav.
Context: India will play five T20Is in New Zealand between October 22 and November 1, followed by a five-match ODI series.
