Six Nations in Race to Host 2036 Olympics, Confirms IOC

The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that six nations are in the race to host the 2036 Olympics, with India among the contenders vying for the world’s biggest sporting event.
The interested parties include Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Turkey, all invited to present their projects to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November 2026. No new bidders will be considered after October 31.
India submitted its Expression of Interest in 2024, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city. The bid is part of the country’s ambition to be seen as a sporting superpower, though officials acknowledge the competition is stiff and the process was paused after Kirsty Coventry’s election as IOC president.
The IOC will assess bids on venues, athlete experience, funding, political and public support, and legacy plans. Hosting the Games requires massive infrastructure and years of preparation.
For India, winning the bid would be a landmark moment, bringing the Olympics to South Asia for the first time. The November presentations will be the first real test of how the contenders stack up.
