Nobel week opens: Medicine prize announced today
The 2026 Nobel season opens on Monday with the announcement of the Physiology or Medicine prize. The Nobel Assembly at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute will name the winner at 11:30 am CEST, which is 3:00 pm in India.
The physics prize follows on Tuesday, October 6, and chemistry on Wednesday, October 7. Literature is announced on Thursday, October 8, the Peace Prize on Friday, October 9 in Oslo, and the economics prize on Monday, October 12.
Among the favourites for the medicine prize are the pioneers of GLP-1 hormone research, the science behind a new generation of weight-loss drugs. Clarivate’s annual list names Jens Juul Holst, Daniel Drucker and Svetlana Mojsov for identifying the hormone and studying its biology.
From this year, Nobel laureates will receive a bigger award. The prize money has been raised to 12 million Swedish kronor, about 1.06 million euros. All announcements stream live on the Nobel Prize’s official channels.
