Messy Home Could Kill Your Dating Chances, Survey Finds
A messy living room could cost you a second date, according to a new American survey that found singles over 40 are quick to judge a romantic prospect by the state of their home.
The survey, carried out by the matchmaking service Tawkify and reported by the New York Post, asked 500 single Americans aged 40 and older — each of whom had been on at least one date in the past five years — about the turn-offs they notice when visiting someone’s home. Half of the respondents said they had lost interest in a date the moment they saw the person’s living space, including 55 percent of women and 42 percent of men.
Living with parents tops the red-flag list
Where and how you live matters enormously. Among singles over 40, 41 percent considered living with parents a red flag, including 42 percent of women and 39 percent of men. Living with adult children and living with roommates drew the same reaction from 21 percent of respondents apiece, according to Tawkify.
The findings also show that first impressions formed in person can override everything that came before: 57 percent of singles said they had spotted a red flag in a date’s home that they had missed entirely while dating the person.
Snap judgments at the door
The survey suggests many singles decide fast. Around 13 percent said they form an opinion of a date within the first few seconds of seeing the inside of their home. Cleanliness and clutter appear to be the biggest triggers, with a chaotic bedroom or a filthy bathroom seen as instant deal-breakers.
Details of the survey were shared on social media, where they went viral. Users on Reddit traded stories of dates ruined by dirty, cobwebbed flats and kitchens with no soap or towels — with one commenter admitting they simply walked out and never looked back.
