ISRO Radar Centre Foundation Stone Laid in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of ISRO's Advanced Radar Research Centre at Chandrapur near Guwahati on September 21, with ISRO chairperson V Narayanan present, marking a major milestone for the state's scientific ecosystem.
The facility is being built under ISRO's Project NETRA, the Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis, which strengthens India's ability to track satellites and orbital debris. The phased-array radar is expected to detect objects as small as 10 cm across a range of up to 2,000 km.
The state government allotted around 200 bighas of land, about 67 to 70 acres, at the former Chandrapur Thermal Power Station site. The first radar, meant for cloud research, is expected by February 2027.
Officials say the centre will also support studies of rainfall, floods and atmospheric conditions. It will be the first facility of its kind in Northeast India, marking a major boost for the region's role in India's space infrastructure.
