The European Space Agency and ISRO have extended their cooperation agreement to January 2032. The amended deal was signed through an exchange of letters in Paris on September 10, during the International Space Summit.

The new framework formally adds human and robotic exploration, space weather and space sustainability to a partnership that has run since January 2002. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan signed the documents.

The amendment builds on a 2025 joint statement on human exploration. It could open the door to European astronauts flying to India’s planned Bharatiya Antariksh Station, according to reports. ESA’s ground network already supports India’s Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1 missions.

Neither agency announced a new mission or budget line with the letters. The agreement is an enabling framework, and specific projects will still need their own approvals and funding.

The extension gives both sides a stable base for long-term planning as the International Space Station nears retirement around 2030. ESA’s member states had approved the amendment in June.
