Northern Lights May Dance Over US, Canada on October 8-9

The northern lights could return to parts of the United States and Canada on the night of October 8 and 9, as a solar storm heads toward Earth.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center expects G1, or minor, geomagnetic storm conditions overnight, with a chance of G2, or moderate, levels early on October 9.

The storm was set off by a coronal mass ejection from an M1.4 solar flare on October 6. A second, weaker ejection from an M1.8 flare later that day is also on its way.

Forecasters say the aurora may be visible across the northern US, though it could be more camera-friendly than visible to the naked eye. The Draconid meteor shower also peaks on October 8 and 9, and a near-new moon on October 10 means dark skies.

CME arrival times are hard to predict, and the storm may only deliver a glancing blow, NOAA cautioned.

Forecasters say up to 22 states could see the lights, though it may be more camera-friendly than visible to the naked eye. People.com and timeanddate.com reported that a new moon on October 10 will keep skies dark.
