Opposition Sets Oct 2-8 ‘Save Democracy’ Protests

The opposition INDIA bloc has announced a week-long protest programme over alleged irregularities in the voter-roll revision exercise. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday that leaders would hold a ‘Save Democracy March’ at the district level from October 2 to October 8. He also said opposition MPs would march to the Election Commission on October 6. Leaders will meet President Droupadi Murmu in the second week of October to raise their concerns. The announcements came after a three-and-a-half-hour meeting of the bloc at the Constitution Club in Delhi on September 30. Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi attended. Banerjee demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. ‘We will fight; we will win; we will protect democracy and the Constitution,’ she said. Rahul Gandhi said: ‘Democracy is bigger than every individual.’ The bloc has accused the Election Commission of being influenced by the government, a charge the Commission has denied. Some alliance members, including AAP and DMK leaders, skipped the meeting.
