Opposition march to Election Commission blocked, MPs sit on dharna

Opposition MPs were stopped from marching to the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi on October 6. Police barricaded the route near the Akashvani building. The MPs then sat on a dharna on Parliament Street. The INDIA bloc had planned to march from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan. It wanted to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Hundreds of security personnel were deployed in central Delhi. Some carried batons and body cameras. Water cannon vehicles stood nearby. Authorities closed several roads around Parliament Street and Jantar Mantar. The protest targeted the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties allege the revision could delete genuine voters. They also object to changes linked to Form 6, the form used for voter registration. The Supreme Court agreed on October 5 to hear petitions on the issue. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant sought responses from the poll panel and the Centre. The bench said it may set aside decisions if they break the law. The Election Commission and the BJP deny the allegations. The Commission says the revision aims to remove duplicate and dead voters.
