Protesters target Mamdani at October 7 vigil in New York

More than 100 protesters confronted New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani at an October 7 memorial vigil in Union Square on Wednesday night.
The demonstrators marched from City Hall to the vigil, organised by Israelis for Peace, chanting traitor and we charge you with genocide. Some waved flags of Hamas and Hezbollah, according to the New York Post.
Mamdani, who attended holding a candle, remained stoic through the disruption, standing alongside city comptroller Brad Lander. Organiser Tamar Glazerman said the vigil was heckled by a few hundred counter-protesters.
The confrontation reflects the deep divisions the Gaza war has opened in New York politics. Mamdani has been a vocal critic of Israel’s conduct in Gaza, drawing fierce opposition from pro-Israel groups.
The incident came on the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks. With the mayoral election weeks away, the episode is likely to feature in the campaign’s final stretch.
