The opposition INDIA bloc is meeting on September 30 to decide on a motion seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, amid its allegations of vote theft and irregularities in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence comes ahead of the winter session of Parliament.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore has said a notice for the removal motion will be given in the Lok Sabha. The bloc is expected to weigh the legal and political viability of the move, which requires a special majority in both Houses, an arithmetic hurdle that has drawn attention to the symbolic nature of the step.

The BJP has dismissed the allegations, accusing the opposition of trying to pressure constitutional institutions. The Election Commission has previously rejected the charges of bias. The meeting is expected to set the tone for the opposition’s campaign plank on electoral integrity ahead of key state polls.
