Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc are preparing an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The bloc will meet in New Delhi on September 30 to discuss the proposed removal motion and may begin collecting signatures, according to reports.

The row began after an Indian Express report said two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had recorded objections 14 times over ten months on SIR-related decisions. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have demanded Kumar's resignation. The DMK has said it will back the motion.

BJP chief ministers have hit back. Yogi Adityanath, Rekha Gupta and Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the poll panel and accused the opposition of attacking constitutional institutions, NDTV reported. Bihar minister Ram Kripal Yadav said the motion would be defeated.

The Election Commission has maintained that differences during internal deliberations are normal and that all final decisions, including those on SIR, were unanimous. TMC MP Mahua Moitra has also filed a police complaint against Kumar.

The September 30 meeting will show whether the bloc moves from planning to a formal notice — a step that would test opposition unity in Parliament.
