Humayun Kabir says he will quit politics after Rejinagar bypoll

Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir has said he will retire from politics once the Rejinagar by-election process is complete. Kabir, the Naoda MLA, was detained by police on polling day after casting his vote in the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll.
Speaking to reporters, Kabir broke down and said he would call a meeting in Naoda and retire at the age of 64. He claimed the BJP would win the Muslim-majority seat, alleging that it had "looted people's mandate" during the bypoll.
The Rejinagar seat fell vacant after Kabir won from both Rejinagar and Nowda in the Assembly elections and resigned from one of the constituencies. Polling was held on October 6, with votes to be counted on October 9.
The contest features BJP nominee Sakharav Sarkar, Trinamool Congress candidate Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, rival TMC candidate Safiuzzaman Sheikh, Congress nominee Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi and CPI(M)'s Syed Asad Ali.
Bypolls were also held for the Nandigram seat, which fell vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won from two constituencies and retained the other. Results of the five Assembly bypolls and one Lok Sabha bypoll in Assam will be declared on October 9.
