Delhi to Get Rs 1,789 Crore AI Traffic Management System

The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 1,789.52 crore AI-based traffic management system for Delhi. The Intelligent Traffic Management System will cover 42 major corridors in the capital.
It will use artificial intelligence, machine learning and real-time traffic data. The project will be implemented by the Delhi Police. Ashwini Vaishnaw said the system will add “brain” to Delhi’s traffic management.
It will include 1,092 adaptive traffic control systems and 1,029 enforcement locations. Adaptive signals will adjust timings based on live traffic density. The aim is to cut delays at junctions.
The system will detect red-light jumping, speeding and wrong-way driving. It will also flag stolen and blacklisted vehicles. Green corridors will give priority to ambulances and emergency vehicles.
The project will roll out in three phases over 24 months. Five years of operation and maintenance will follow. Delhi has about 71 lakh active registered vehicles.
The system will also connect with Variable Message Sign boards and mobile apps. Commuters will get real-time updates on congestion, diversions and parking. Traffic data will be shared with navigation providers. Technology support will come from C-DAC under the IT ministry. The rollout follows a “One Network, Smarter Traffic” approach.
