‘Cockroach’ movement begins nationwide protest from today

India’s self-styled ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ has announced a nationwide protest starting today, October 2, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over changes to voter lists.
Party founder Abhijeet Dipke said the agitation will begin in Mumbai on Gandhi Jayanti and then expand to cities across India. The group wants Kumar to quit over a newspaper report that his deputies questioned him over voter-list changes the opposition says benefit the ruling party.
Reuters reported the protest call on September 25, giving Kumar a deadline of September 26. The Election Commission responded that differences among officers were normal in any institution and that all its actions were lawful.
The protest adds to the pressure on the poll body. The opposition INDIA bloc has separately announced ‘Save Democracy’ marches from October 2 to October 8 over the same controversy, with a joint march of opposition MPs to the Election Commission planned for October 6.
