Andhra Pradesh SIR: 1.68 lakh voters found ineligible

Around 168,000 registered voters in Andhra Pradesh were found ineligible for inclusion in the final electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision, election officials said. The reasons included failure to submit verification documents or attend hearings.

Officials said hearings had been completed for 99.96 per cent of the 4.428 million notices delivered by September 28. Only 1,665 electors failed to respond at all.

The Election Commission has also extended the revision schedule in the state. The disposal of claims and objections will now continue until October 10, and the final electoral roll will be published on October 16. Meghalaya’s final roll will be published on October 26.

The extension was approved at a full Commission meeting on September 30. The poll body said the revision was a participatory process involving voters, political parties and election officials. The revision schedule has been extended three times in Andhra Pradesh to clear backlogs.
