Modi, Trump speak as India pushes interim trade deal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Wednesday as India seeks an interim trade deal with Washington.
The leaders reviewed cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, the Prime Minister’s Office said. They reaffirmed their commitment to the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
Trade Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting the US from September 29 to October 5 for talks on a bilateral trade agreement and an interim arrangement.
Goyal arrived in Milwaukee for a G20 trade ministers’ meeting. He also met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and discussed an early conclusion of the trade deal.
India and the US have yet to reach agreement after months of negotiations. New Delhi is seeking improved terms in the proposed deal.
Earlier this month, India told Washington that new US tariff measures linked to India’s Russian oil purchases could affect bilateral relations. Goyal also met chief executives and senior executives from US manufacturing and technology companies at a roundtable in Milwaukee.
