Eight Pune students drown at Diveagar beach during picnic

Eight students from a Pune coaching institute drowned at Diveagar beach in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on October 1 during a school picnic.

The students, all aged 16, were from Winners Academy for Classes 11 and 12 in Alandi, Pune. They were part of a 48-member group with 25 boys, 17 girls and six teachers.

The group had travelled about 170 kilometres to Diveagar and reached the beach around 5.30 pm. Eight students entered the sea and were swept away.

Police said the students misjudged the depth of the water and the strength of the current. A local water sports team led by Bhau Salunkhe recovered the bodies.

The bodies were sent to the Primary Health Centre at Borli Panchatan for post-mortem examinations. The police are carrying out further legal proceedings.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Raju Sonawane said the students failed to accurately gauge the water conditions. Maharashtra Minister Bharatshet Gogawale visited the district hospital.
