Mumbai police book CJP leaders, 400 supporters over protest

Mumbai Police on Saturday registered a First Information Report against the organisers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest and 400 to 500 unidentified persons in connection with an October 2 demonstration at Shivaji Park.

The case was registered under Sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act, covering unlawful assembly and wilful disobedience of a lawful order. Police said no one has been arrested so far and the probe is underway.

The case was lodged on the complaint of a Shivaji Park resident. Advocate Siddhi Deolekar separately lodged a complaint against CJP activists Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das and Ratna Singh for allegedly proceeding despite denial of permission.

The CJP had organised the protest seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police had denied permission citing noise and traffic concerns.

Separately, the National Human Rights Commission took cognisance on October 3 of allegations that minors were present at the protest. It directed Mumbai Police to investigate and submit an action taken report within a week.
