Mumbai CNG price rises to Rs 89 per kg, fifth hike this year

Mumbai, Oct 3 — Compressed natural gas prices in Mumbai rose by Rs 1 per kg on Thursday, taking the price to Rs 89 per kg.

Mahanagar Gas Limited cited the rising cost of domestic gas and imported regasified LNG, amid the West Asia crisis. This is the fifth CNG price hike this year.

The price has risen Rs 8 since April. Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers now face higher operating costs, and unions are expected to renew demands for fare increases.

Earlier fare revisions set the minimum auto-rickshaw fare at Rs 27 and the minimum taxi fare at Rs 33 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

CNG mostly powers commercial vehicles such as autos, taxis and buses in Mumbai. Over 4.5 lakh auto-rickshaws and 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis run in the region. MGL said the hike ensures continuity of supply. Transport experts warn the increase could push some commuters toward two-wheelers as daily travel costs climb.
