Gem Granites’ Veeramani remanded in fresh POCSO case

Gem Granites owner Gem R Veeramani has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days following his arrest in a fresh complaint alleging the sexual abuse of a minor girl in Madurai, according to reports on Thursday.

Veeramani, 84, was produced before the Chennai Special POCSO Court on Wednesday after being arrested by Madurai police and brought to Chennai. The new complaint adds to the cases already under investigation against the industrialist.

Veeramani was first arrested on August 29 by the Central Crime Branch on charges of sexually abusing minor girls, along with two alleged associates. A Special Investigation Team of the Tamil Nadu Police is probing the allegations. On October 1, the Chennai City Police Commissioner ordered the trio’s detention under the Goondas Act.

Three former employees were arrested on October 5 for alleged abetment in the case, and police have recorded statements from additional survivors. Provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were also added after one survivor was found to belong to a Scheduled Caste community.
