Mumbai braces for hot October days as monsoon retreats

Mumbai is bracing for hot October days as the retreating monsoon replaces frequent rain with hotter afternoons, high humidity and drier conditions.
Weather data for October 5 indicated maximum temperatures around 36 degrees Celsius, with humidity remaining high. The combination can feel uncomfortable even when temperatures stay below inland extremes.
The city’s coastal humidity slows the body’s ability to cool itself through evaporation. After monsoon withdrawal, stronger sunshine and reduced cloud cover produce the familiar “October heat” effect.
The transition is also affecting air quality. With less rain to wash out suspended particles, Mumbai has seen AQI readings move above 100 at several monitoring locations. Navi Mumbai’s AQI was 190 on Monday, in the moderate category.
Residents working outdoors should stay hydrated and seek shade during the hottest hours. They should watch for dizziness or unusual fatigue. Official forecasts remain the best guide for daily planning. The India Meteorological Department predicts minimal to no rainfall for Mumbai in the coming days, so the hot and humid pattern is likely to continue.
