The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has suspended the licences and registrations of 30 food establishments after a five-day festive-season drive. The action ran from September 23 to 27 under the Safe Food Safe Maharashtra campaign.

Of the 30 outlets, 13 are in Mumbai, six in Konkan, eight in Pune and three in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe led the enforcement.

The list includes Kyani and Co, the 122-year-old Irani cafe in Kalbadevi. Inspectors visited it on September 27 and found rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches. They also found cats on the premises, blood collected in a fridge, an open sewage manhole in the processing area and food stored on the floor.

Other outlets faced action too. Colaba Sweet Mart had lizards and larvae. Arun Vilas Farsan in Dharavi, Ruchi Veg in Parel and Royal China were also named.

The FDA seized 50,601.78 kg of food worth Rs 1.19 crore during the drive. Suspensions were ordered under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
