The Maharashtra government has declared drought in 265 of the state’s 358 talukas after deficient monsoon rainfall damaged Kharif crops this season.

The declaration came through a government resolution on September 26, based on the Agriculture Commissioner’s report. Drought-like conditions have prevailed since June across 32 districts, with the state activating Trigger-1 — the first stage under its drought framework — for rainfall deficits above 25% combined with a 21-day dry spell.

The move covers about 74% of the state. Worst-hit districts include Yavatmal, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Nagpur, Amravati and Nanded, with most affected talukas in Solapur, Nashik, Latur, Beed, Buldhana and Chandrapur.

A 12-point relief package includes a land revenue waiver, restructuring of crop loans, a stay on farm loan recovery, concessions on agri-pump electricity bills, waived exam fees for students, MNREGA works relaxation and drinking water tankers.

Collectors must assess crop losses and submit geotagged photos with GPS coordinates to the government. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said no affected farmer would be left out of the relief process.
