Noida Floodplain Protest Over Power, Water Snarls Traffic

Residents of Noida’s floodplain, led by Bharatiya Kisan Parishad president Sukhbir Khaleefa, staged a protest on Friday demanding electricity and water connections, causing massive traffic jams and a heavy police deployment.
The demonstration is part of a longer agitation: the Hindon floodplain protest seeking formal electricity connections entered its 16th day this week, with 35 residents on an indefinite fast, according to reports. Residents allege high-rises nearby receive power through informal means while they are denied formal connections.
Separately, farmers from Ladpura village continued their sit-in on Thursday, pressing for 10 per cent residential plots instead of the 6 per cent offered.
The floodplain protests have simmered since September, when the discom disconnected thousands of illegal lines. Temporary connections were issued after an earlier protest on September 13.
The protest follows years of tension over utilities in the floodplain. Earlier, the Noida administration had issued over 100 notices to Supernova Towers homeowners under the Sarai Act, 1867, for running unregistered short-term rentals. The floodplain agitation is the latest in a series of civic protests in Gautam Buddh Nagar this week.
