Cabinet clears Rs 1.86 lakh crore green energy corridor

The Union Cabinet has cleared Green Energy Corridor Phase-III with an outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore. The project will evacuate 135 GW of renewable capacity by 2032-33.
The plan was approved on September 30, 2026. Central assistance will be Rs 54,082 crore, about 29 percent of the total outlay.
Rs 1,36,378 crore will go to intra-state transmission lines. Another Rs 50,000 crore is set for 50 GWh of battery storage. Storage is key to handling solar and wind power.
The corridor will carry clean power from renewable-rich states to demand centres. Without transmission, new solar and wind plants cannot sell their power.
India is adding renewable capacity at a fast pace. Grid links have become the main bottleneck for the energy transition.
Battery storage will help manage the ups and downs of solar and wind. It can store daytime solar power for evening demand.
The project is one of India’s largest green infrastructure bets. It signals that the government sees transmission as central to its 2030 clean energy goals.
