The Andhra Pradesh High Court has ruled that over 120 writ petitions against the three-capitals plan have become infructuous, now that Parliament has written Amaravati into law as the state’s sole capital. The verdict was delivered by a division bench led by Chief Justice Lisa Gill.

The petitions had challenged the previous YSRCP government’s plan to split the capital between Amaravati, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool. The court noted that with Amaravati now legally recognised as the only capital, the pleas no longer have any ground to stand on.

Pending matters will be taken up on November 20, the court said. Appeals in the Supreme Court, where the state government’s challenge to an earlier High Court order is being heard, are listed for November 29.

The ruling is a major boost for the Amaravati project. The state government has already invited bids for the capital’s power distribution network and approved fresh funds for infrastructure works in the city.
