October Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is observed worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The annual campaign puts the spotlight on early detection, timely treatment and women’s health.
Breast cancer remains a major public-health concern. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally in 2024, with 694,000 deaths that year. WHO stresses that early diagnosis and timely treatment are the most effective ways to reduce the burden.
In India, breast cancer is among the most common cancers. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists breast, cervical and oral cancers among the country’s most frequent malignancies.
Health experts advise women to watch for changes in breast health and seek medical evaluation promptly when concerns arise. Awareness campaigns this month encourage families to look beyond slogans and pay attention to everyday health.
India’s screening network has logged over 170 million breast cancer screenings through its primary health centres, government figures show. Tripura launched a month-long awareness campaign on October 1, backed by AIIMS and Jhpiego, with breast cancer accounting for 30.4 per cent of cancers among Indian women.
