24-week ashwagandha trial finds no liver or kidney harm

A large clinical trial has found 24 weeks of ashwagandha use well-tolerated. It found no evidence of liver or kidney injury.

The multicentre trial was randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled. It was published in Frontiers in Medicine on August 20, 2026.

It covered 1,200 healthy adults aged 18 to 70. They took 500 mg of standardised aqueous ashwagandha root extract daily. This equals 4 grams of raw root powder.

The dose continued for 24 weeks. Participants were followed up to week 28.

The trial was run by 45 researchers from 9 institutions. These included CCRAS and the All India Institute of Ayurveda. It ran across 7 sites.

Liver and kidney function stayed within reference ranges through the trial. There were no serious adverse events linked to the extract. No one withdrew due to adverse events.

The Ministry of Ayush announced the findings on September 28. The trial adds to the evidence base on ashwagandha’s safety.

It was one of the largest trials of its kind. It tested a standardised extract equivalent to 4 grams of raw root powder.
