Odisha on Alert as Low Pressure Brews in Bay

Odisha is on alert as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal shows signs of intensifying into a cyclonic storm, with the India Meteorological Department tracking its movement toward the state’s coast.
The system, currently over the east-central Bay, is expected to concentrate into a depression within 24 hours and could strengthen further as it moves northwest. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and those already out have been asked to return.
The state government has put district administrations on standby, activating control rooms and positioning disaster response teams. Officials said low-lying coastal areas are being monitored for heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next 48 to 72 hours.
October is climatically significant for Odisha, which has historically faced some of its most destructive cyclones in the post-monsoon months. The 1999 super cyclone and Cyclone Fani in 2019 both struck during this season.
The IMD said it will issue updated bulletins every six hours. Authorities have urged residents to follow official advisories and avoid rumours on social media about the storm’s path.
