Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has commissioned its first green hydrogen facility, a 300 kW electrolyser plant set up as a pilot at its Manesar plant in Haryana. An electrolyser is a device that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The company announced the project recently.

The plant runs on surplus solar power made at the Manesar facility. Electricity produced on holidays would otherwise go unused. It now powers the electrolyser to make hydrogen, which is stored and used later. The hydrogen is blended with natural gas and used as process fuel in the factory.

Based on learnings from the pilot, MSIL plans to scale up green hydrogen technology across its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat. The project aligns with the Government of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The company aims to cut its manufacturing carbon footprint from 6.15 lakh tonnes to 2.66 lakh tonnes by FY2030-31. It is also building a 10 tonnes-per-day biogas plant at Kharkhoda, due in FY2026-27, and has added a 1 MWh battery storage system there.

The pilot puts Maruti among the first large Indian carmakers to test green hydrogen for its own factory operations.
