The India Meteorological Department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall, over 21 cm, at isolated places over north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra and the south Gujarat region on Monday, September 28. Saurashtra and Kutch face the same threat on September 29.

A red alert is in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and the ghat areas of Nashik. The department also expects very heavy rainfall, 12 to 20 cm, across Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and the Gujarat region on September 28 and 29.

Akashvani reported that heavy to very heavy rain will continue over Kutch and Saurashtra. The weather department said the system could cause waterlogging, flooding in low-lying areas and major disruption to traffic, including roads and local trains.

People in affected areas have been advised to limit movement and avoid flood-prone zones. District administrations have been asked to stay alert, monitor rivers and keep control rooms running round the clock.

The intense spell follows a weekend of heavy showers that soaked parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Conditions are expected to ease gradually after September 29.
