The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued a red alert for swell surges along the entire Kerala coast, warning of high waves from the sea.

The phenomenon, known locally as Kallakkadal, brings sudden high waves that can flood coastal areas even in calm weather. Fishing has been banned along the affected coast, and residents have been asked to stay away from the shore.

Alerts have also been issued for coastal Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari and Lakshadweep. Authorities said the surge could last through the day and advised small boat owners to secure their vessels.

Swell surges occur when long-period waves travel great distances across the ocean and hit the coast with force. Disaster management teams have been put on standby, and coastal residents have been told to follow official updates.

Coastal residents have been asked to move fishing gear to safe places. The state disaster management authority is monitoring the situation and issuing updates through local channels. Similar swell surges have caused damage to coastal homes in Kerala in past years.
