Cyclone Arnab Kills 67 in UP in Three Days of Heavy Rain
Cyclone Arnab brought three days of heavy rainfall to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, leaving at least 67 people dead in UP, while rivers in Bihar rose above danger levels.
Between September 25 and 27, Uttar Pradesh recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain against a normal of 7.6 millimetres for the period. The downpour caused house collapses and flooding in several districts, with officials confirming 56 deaths and reports putting the toll higher at 67.
In Bihar, 19 districts were placed under rain alerts as the Kosi and Bagmati rivers flowed above danger marks. Standing paddy crops suffered heavy damage, raising fears of losses for farmers just before the harvest season.
Officials said Cyclone Arnab has weakened, but a new deep depression has formed near the Myanmar coast and could bring further rain to the region. Disaster management teams have been asked to stay on alert as water levels in rivers continue to rise.
