Indian 3 has been officially confirmed, with post-production work commencing on the third instalment of the vigilante franchise, according to reports published on Thursday.

Kamal Haasan returns as the iconic Senapathy, with director Shankar once again at the helm and Lyca Productions backing the ambitious project.

The new chapter will explore the story of Senapathy’s father, Veerasekaran Balram, taking the franchise into its past for the first time. Returning cast members include Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and S J Suryah.

Music will be composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Ravi Varman, signalling a grand scale for the period portions and action sequences.

The confirmation ends speculation about the franchise’s future after Indian 2. The original Indian, released in 1996, remains one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated films, and expectations for the long-awaited third chapter are very high. A release date is yet to be announced.
