Haiwaan ends run at Rs 9.92 cr; Priyadarshan to stick to comedy

Haiwaan has ended its theatrical run with just Rs 9.92 crore net in India, making it one of the biggest box office disappointments of the year for a star-led film.
The Priyadarshan-directed crime thriller, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, released on September 11. It opened at about Rs 3 crore, grew slightly over the weekend to Rs 7.35 crore, and then collapsed on Monday. Its worldwide gross is about Rs 15.05 crore.
Against a reported budget of Rs 130 crore, the film recovered only about 7.6 per cent of its cost – a deficit of roughly Rs 120 crore. Trade tracker Koimoi has given it a flop verdict.
Director Priyadarshan has responded to the failure by saying he will stick to comedy with Akshay Kumar. He said Hindi audiences associate him mainly with comedy, and he will keep experimenting with serious films only in the South. The film was a remake of the Malayalam hit Oppam. Its failure has renewed debate about Akshay Kumar’s recent box office pull.
