Eva Marie Saint, ‘On the Waterfront’ Star, Dies at 102

Eva Marie Saint, the Oscar-winning star of “On the Waterfront” and “North by Northwest,” has died at 102. She died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family.
Saint won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her film debut. She played Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama “On the Waterfront,” opposite Marlon Brando. Five years later, she was the cool double agent Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest.”
Born in Newark, New Jersey, on July 4, 1924, Saint trained at the Actors Studio. Her career spanned seven decades. She worked with directors including Otto Preminger, John Frankenheimer and Vincente Minnelli.
She won an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries “People Like Us.” Later films included “Superman Returns” and “Because of Winn-Dixie.”
Saint stepped back from the spotlight to raise her family, often limiting herself to one film a year. She was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016.
After Olivia de Havilland’s death in 2020, Saint was the oldest living Oscar winner. Hollywood has lost one of its last links to the golden age.
