Lady A singer Charles Kelley has revealed that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer.

The 45-year-old shared the news in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday, sitting beside his wife Cassie Kelley. He said “random rib fractures” prompted his doctor to order blood tests, which uncovered the disease.

“One of the last blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma, and it’s rare,” Kelley said. “But I’m young, I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far.”

Kelley said he feels hopeful and is drawing on the mindset from his sobriety journey, which he made public in August 2022. He described sharing the diagnosis as “freeing”.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Modern treatments have significantly improved outcomes for patients in recent years.

Kelley is one-third of the country group Lady A, alongside Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood. The band postponed a tour in 2022 to support him during his recovery from alcohol issues. There was no immediate word on whether upcoming performances would be affected.
