Ukrainian forces struck the Azov Optical-Mechanical Plant in Russia’s Rostov region overnight on September 26, Ukraine’s General Staff said. A fire broke out at the plant’s foundry, and equipment in five production buildings was damaged, the military said. Ukraine’s Security Service said the operation was carried out by its Alpha Special Operations Center and the Navy. It said domestically produced Neptune cruise missiles and Ruta, Palianytsia and Bars jet-powered drone missiles were used. The plant is part of Russia’s Tactical Missiles Corporation. Ukrainian military intelligence lists it as a producer of electronics for precision artillery, missile and anti-tank weapons, and radar seekers for guided missiles. SBU damage assessments listed the optical and foundry facilities, an assembly area, an electroplating workshop and a printed circuit board plant. Satellite imagery cited by analysts showed strikes on at least five workshops. Russia did not immediately confirm the extent of the damage. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly acknowledged the operation. Kyiv described it as part of its campaign to degrade Russia’s military-industrial capacity.
