A $20 million reward for information on Maj. Robert “Magyar” Brovdi’s whereabouts is being circulated through post-Soviet criminal networks, according to the Wall Street Journal. Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces confirmed the bounty exists.

Brovdi commands Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces and founded “Magyar’s Birds,” the 414th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade. He became one of the most recognizable figures in Ukraine’s drone war after building a strike unit that began with hobbyist quadcopters.

Russian courts have convicted him in absentia on terrorism charges and sentenced him to decades or life in prison, according to the reports. The bounty marks a new escalation in Moscow’s targeting of him.

Brovdi has claimed his drone operators account for an outsized share of Russian losses. His figures include a claim that 2.5% of Ukrainian forces are credited with around one-third of Russian personnel losses. He has also said 79 of his troops were killed and claims a ratio of 656 Russian casualties for every fallen soldier. These are his own claims and have not been independently verified.
