Three-day bank strike deferred; banks open today

The planned three-day bank strike from 28 to 30 September has been deferred, and banks operated normally on Monday. The United Forum of Bank Unions called off the strike after talks with the Indian Banks’ Association.
According to reports, the two sides reached an understanding on key demands, including the long-pending demand for all Saturdays off. A joint committee will now examine the five-day work week proposal in detail.
The strike had threatened to disrupt banking services across the country for three working days. Customers feared delays in branch services, cheque clearances and cash handling during the crucial month-end period.
With the deferral, regular banking services continued without interruption on Monday. Unions said further action will depend on the outcome of the joint committee’s deliberations in the coming weeks.
The UFBU represents employees and officers across public sector banks. Union leaders said the strike was deferred, not withdrawn, and warned of fresh action if the talks fail to deliver.
