Sensex tanks 1,124 points, Nifty ends below 22,800

Indian equity benchmarks fell sharply on Monday as the Sensex crashed 1,124.02 points, or 1.52 per cent, to close at 72,771.72. The Nifty declined 360.25 points, or 1.56 per cent, ending at 22,780.25, below the key 22,800 level.
Market reports attributed the sell-off to surging crude oil prices and growing geopolitical uncertainty. Brent crude was trading at $108.30 a barrel, up 3.81 per cent, stoking fears of higher inflation and a wider import bill for India.
The decline pushed the Sensex to a six-month low, according to market coverage. Selling was broad-based across sectors as investors turned cautious. Weak global cues added to the pressure through the trading session.
Analysts said the market will take cues from crude price movements and geopolitical developments in the coming sessions. Traders will watch whether the indices can stabilise or extend their losing run.
Market breadth stayed negative through the session, with declining stocks outnumbering gainers. Currency and bond markets will also be watched as elevated crude prices keep inflation risks alive.
