GSECL signs MoU with NPCIL for 4,000 MW nuclear project

Gujarat State Electricity Corporation has signed an MoU with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India for a new nuclear power project. The signing took place on October 1.
The proposed project at Dhuvaran is expected to have a capacity of around 4,000 MW. It could involve a potential investment of nearly Rs one lakh crore.
This marks GSECL’s first entry into nuclear power. The move aims to strengthen Gujarat’s long-term energy security and expand access to clean, reliable power.
GSECL will assess land availability and supporting infrastructure. NPCIL will carry out site surveys, technical studies and provide expert guidance.
Further work will depend on technical and economic feasibility and statutory approvals. Gujarat has set a target of over 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The project will operate under the Shanti Act, 2025, whose rules were notified on August 14. India has 24 operable reactors with nearly 8 GWe of capacity. The government targets 100 GWe of nuclear capacity by 2047.
