Adani, Bhutan Sign 770MW Hydro Power Deal

Adani Power has signed an agreement for the 770MW Chamkharchhu-I hydropower project in Bhutan. The deal was signed on Monday in Thimphu.
Bhutan’s prime minister Tshering Tobgay attended the signing. Adani will hold 49 percent of the project. Bhutan’s DGPC will hold 51 percent.
The project will be built on the Chamkharchhu river in Zhemgang. It will use a build-own-operate-transfer model with a 30-year concession.
Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2027. The plant should be commissioned within six years of starting.
This is Adani’s second Bhutan project. In September 2025 it signed the 570MW Wangchhu project. Both are part of a 5,000MW MoU signed in May 2025.
The deal strengthens energy ties between India and Bhutan. Adani’s Anil Sardana said the project marks another milestone in clean energy growth. Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2027. The plant should be commissioned within six years of starting work.
