The Trump administration moved late Friday to cancel $810 million in funding already approved by Congress for refugee, migrant and diversity programs, using a rare budget tool called a pocket rescission, according to CNN.

The largest cut, $567 million, hit Health and Human Services accounts that funded nonprofits serving refugees and asylees. Other cuts covered $70 million in programs the White House branded “Woke International Education,” $25 million for migrant student education and $56 million in housing counseling grants.

The White House said the money was no longer needed because illegal border crossings have fallen and called the spending wasteful. Critics, including Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, called the move an illegal impoundment that undermines Congress’s power of the purse.

The request comes five days before the fiscal year ends on September 30. Once submitted, funds pause while Congress has 45 days to act, but the deadline means the money would effectively lapse. Legal challenges are expected.
